National cuisine of the Netherlands is not so world wide popular as other European specialties. But it is very nutritious and, without any doubts, tasty. Typical breakfast usually consists of sandwidges made of bread with Dutch cheese, sausages, or toasts with butter, jam or honey. The locals preferably drink coffee, tea, chocolate milk and fruit juice. Among the specialties of the Netherlands we should enumerate the following. Boerenkool met rookworst (kale and potatoes served with smoked sausage), Groentensoep (soup with vegetables, vermicelli and meatballs), Erwtensoep (thick pea soup, served with brown or white bread).
For the dessert they eat the pancakes, which are called Flensjes or pannekoeken. There exists more than 25 recipes of this dessert. Alternatives to it are Offertje (fried doughs dusted with sugar) and Spekkoek (layers of heavy buttered sponge and spices). Practically at every corner you can buy lightly salted herring. There are some rules how to eat this fish. You should hold it carefully by the tail and than drop into the throat. The variety of seafood is really impressive. Royal imperial oysters, mussels, lobster, and shrimps are cooked in different ways. The beer in the Netherlands is also very tasty as well as the liqueurs (Curaçao, Parfait d’Amour, Triple Sec).
